How to Make a Photo Collage Online (Free, No App Needed)

The ImgToPDFConvert Team3 min read

A collage turns a collection of separate photos into a single cohesive image — perfect for social media posts, gifts, presentations, and memory boards. You do not need Canva, Photoshop, or any installed app.

When to use a collage

  • Social media. Show multiple moments from an event in one Instagram post.
  • Before/after comparisons. Side-by-side photos for fitness progress, home renovations, or design iterations.
  • Product showcases. Display multiple angles or variants of a product in one image.
  • Memory boards. Combine family photos, travel snapshots, or milestone moments.
  • Presentations. A single collage image is easier to embed in a slide than five separate photos.

Make a collage in 3 steps

Use the Photo Collage maker:

  1. Upload your photos — select 2 to 12 images. JPG, PNG, and WebP are all accepted.
  2. Choose a layout — grid, masonry, freeform, or side-by-side. Adjust spacing and background colour.
  3. Download your collage — a single high-resolution image ready to share or print.

Choosing the right layout

Tips for great collages

1. Use photos with similar lighting

Photos taken in vastly different lighting (bright outdoor + dim indoor) look jarring side by side. If possible, use photos from the same session or with similar colour temperatures.

2. Stick to a colour palette

A cohesive colour palette makes the collage feel intentional rather than random. Choose photos that share dominant colours.

3. Vary composition

Mix close-ups with wide shots, portraits with landscapes. Variety keeps the viewer's eye moving across the collage.

4. Leave breathing room

Do not cram too many photos into one collage. White space (or coloured spacing between cells) prevents the image from feeling cluttered.

5. Resize for your platform

After creating the collage, resize it to match your target platform's dimensions. See our social media image size guide for exact dimensions.

6. Compress before uploading

A high-resolution collage with 12 photos can exceed 10 MB. Run it through Compress Image to shrink the file size before posting.

Collage ideas by occasion

Travel recap

Combine 6-9 photos from a trip: landmarks, food, people, scenery. Use a grid layout with narrow spacing.

Wedding or event highlights

Select 4-6 key moments from the event. A masonry layout with wider spacing looks elegant.

Product launch

Show the product from multiple angles, in different colours, or in various use cases. Grid layout with a white background.

Year in review

Choose one photo per month. A 3x4 grid with thin borders creates a clean annual summary.

Real estate

Combine exterior, interior, kitchen, and bathroom photos. Grid layout gives each room equal visual weight.

After the collage

Once your collage is created:

  • Save as PDF: Use Image to PDF to convert the collage to a PDF for printing or professional sharing.
  • Add a watermark: Use Watermark PDF on the PDF version to protect your work.
  • Post to social media: Upload the JPG/PNG directly, or resize first with Resize Image.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum number of photos?

The Photo Collage tool supports up to 12 photos per collage. For more photos, create multiple collages and combine them.

Can I add text to the collage?

Text overlays depend on the tool. For adding text after creation, use any basic image editor or add a watermark to the PDF version.

What resolution will the collage be?

The output resolution depends on the input photos. Higher-resolution source photos produce a higher-resolution collage. Start with the best quality images you have.

Can I make a collage from PDF pages?

Yes. Extract pages as images using PDF to JPG, then use those images to create a collage.
