How close to the target will the result be?
Typically within a few percent under it β the search finds the highest quality whose output still fits. It never exceeds your target.
What if my image is already smaller than the target?
It's returned unchanged and the tool tells you so β no pointless re-encoding, no quality loss.
What happens with very aggressive targets like 20 KB?
Quality drops first; if even minimum quality is too large, the image is progressively downscaled until it fits. A clear error appears only if the combination is truly impossible.
Why does PNG sometimes need more downscaling than JPG?
PNG is lossless by nature β its size lever (palette reduction) is weaker than JPG's quality dial, so photographic PNGs often need dimension reduction to hit small targets. Converting to JPG first gets smaller files at the same look.
